I have had a hard time coming up with fitness goals in the year and a half that I have been trying to reach some elusive and unknown “goal”. I know I am overweight but I honestly do not know what a healthy weight (or size) is for me. The last time I was a healthy weight I was a teenager and now I am 32 years old. I am smart enough to know that if I shoot for my weight at 17 years old I might be in for some disappointment.
I am joining the gym tomorrow so I finally have nailed down 3 realistic, attainable and healthy goals for myself that do not focus on my appearance, but on my health and strength. Tomorrow I will weight, photograph and measure myself and then do it monthly after that to track progress.
GOALS
1. Resting heart-rate in the low 70’s
2. Running (no walking) a 5k in <30 minutes
3. Body fat percentage in the ‘Athletic’ zone of 14% - 20%

I generally do not post pictures of sports models since they often look like they could have come out of a swimsuit issue and although they are beautiful, I often find it more discouraging than inspirational. Occasionally, however, I come across a picture like this one and the models strength and hard work are so apparent that is does inspire and it does feel within my grasp.

Tomorrow morning I go to get my YMCA membership! So super excited! I have not been able to afford a gym membership for a few years and I am looking forward to the cross training and trying some new things. My location is the largest ‘Y’ in my city and they have a lot of options in classes and a climbing wall that I am itching to see (let’s ignore that the last time I climbed was 14 years and 50lbs. ago).

Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day: Matt W. has spastic cerebral palsy, which means his mobility is severely limited. But Matt was determined to run in his Ohio elementary school’s Field Day race, so his best friend, the gym teacher Mr. Blaine, led Matt’s classmates in a spontaneous show of support.
OMG TISSUES.
[thanks, andra!]
Sometimes I see a picture and all I can think is, “I would love to go running there”.
I am joining the local YMCA on Wednesday and I am really psyched about it. I will be taking some “before” pictures and measurements so I can accurately track my progress and I am assumed they will have some way for me to track my body fat percentage there at the gym.
I am really hoping that cross training will be the key to really seeing more of the results I am aiming for. I am also hoping this will help me to increase my running speed and stamina so I can slaughter my half marathon in November.
Similar surface to what is used on golf balls, these Nike suits may actually let runners break further records.
